Fischer earns Top-Ten at Fontana
After finishing fifth in the season-opening Daytona 500 one week ago, Benjamin Fischer continues to open the 2023 NASCAR iRacing Series strong, earning another top ten finish in Saturday’s Fontana 200 at Auto Club Speedway.
The race saw 6 cautions and a longer green flag in the second half of the race, before chaos unfolded setting up three consecutive green-white-checkers attempts in the final laps of the race.
Fischer had stayed out on older tires, taking a gamble on seeing no more caution periods at the end. Staying out pushed the 38-year old forward to third position.
But two more quick yellows meant the strategy did not quite pay off as much as Fischer and his team had hoped.
On the final restart the Leipzig, Germany driver lost a couple more positions but was able to bring home an eighth place finish in the end.
“I was driving my tail off on those three late restarts. That was some wild stuff. All I saw was people wrecking all around me. I hit one car on the wreck that brought out that last caution. But luckily it wasn’t too bad.”, said Fischer.
“I will say this, after the struggles we had in practice, qualifying only 32nd, I was real happy with how we’d run in the race. That was awesome.”
In the division 3 championship standings, Fischer now sits tenth in points after race 2 of 36.
The NASCAR iRacing Series now travels to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for next weekend’s Las Vegas 200.
