No. 84 Porsche wins NEC Round 6
In Qualifying, for a while it looked like Fischer would pick up the team's second pole position, after Mayer had already put the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup on pole in last month's NEC Round 4. At the end it was P3 in Qualifying at a lap time of 8:09.657, with the first five cars all sitting within two seconds of each other.
Coming to the start of the race, dramatic scenes unfolded. One of the GT3 class cars stopped and let the CUP class cars pass, only to accelerate again in an attempt to close the gap toe the GT3 starter field. The scene resulted in a crash that involved both cars starting in front of Fischer, bevore the green flag even waved.
"I can honestly say, I've seen a thing or two, but that was pure insanity today. I have no idea what was wrong with the GT3. They stopped and then he came back to plow his way through the CUP class field. I was able to react, barely in time. I'm gutted for those other guys.", explained Fischer.
Shocked by the dramatic incident, that even involved one car flipping over, Fischer had to try hard to regain focus on the race ahead. After one lap the Leipzig, Germany driver held second position.
The team decided to save fuel on the opening stint and thus Fischer kept his distance to the race leader, but remained within two to three seconds, even though the No. 271 Porsche of race leaders T3 eSports had front end damage.
"We wanted to make sure we had at least one eight-lap stint in the race, because we didn't know if we'd need that extra lap at the end of the race.", Fischer said.
Opening up a big lead over the rest of the field, the top two cars kept pacing away, before Fischer eventually took the lead for the first time on lap four, after the race leading Porsche Cup car spun at Hohe Acht.
For the 36-year old now everything went according to plan and after a solid, mistake free double stint, Fischer returned to the pit box a second time around the halfway mark of the race. By now, however, the No. 5 Porsche of H2P Performance SRT's Thomas Asmussen had fought within five seconds of Fischer.
Now it was up to team-mate Manuel Mayer to take over the steering wheel. When Mayer returned to the track, he was in second place and saw Asmussen come out of the pits four seconds ahead of him one lap later.
"We took a bit more fuel than the No. 5, I think. But his pace was very strong, too. My out lap was not good at all, because a TCR held me up forever at Kallenhardt.", Mayer said.
But Mayer didn't give up. As the race entered crunch time, the Teisendorf, Germany driver kept battling and getting closer to the lead. Six laps before the end of the race, Mayer took the lead. Shortly after, the H2P Performance SRT Porsche of Asmussen crashed at the exit of the NGK chicane. Now holding a 50 second lead, Mayer eased off and finished the race, crossing the line in first place.
"Man, what a day. Everything went perfect for us today. The boys in the pits did an awesome job. The setup was perfect. I'm so proud of our performance today. That was perfect team work.", a jubilent Mayer explained after the race.
For Fischer Motorsport and the No. 84 Porsche team it was win number two in the current season. After six of nine championship rounds the team now holds third place in the official CUP class point standings.
The next round of the iRacing Nürburgring Endurance Championship takes place on August 23rd.
